idiomatic 1st date

He shot his mouth off,
Sounding ridiculous.
He shot himself in the foot,
Only to put his foot in his mouth.

He would've turned a blind eye,
If the wool hadn't already been pulled over them.
He thought he had his eye on the prize,
Looking for his blessing in disguise.

Waiting for the other shoe to drop,
From the sublime to the ridiculous,
He found himself shaking in his boots,
Wanting only to fly to the south.

Spam, you must learn to love yourself,

and accept what you really are:

Conglomerate of mystery.

Fight no more to be something else

Or make sense of the mess inside.

Spam, you must learn to love yourself.

Comprised of disparate sources,

Byproducts compressed, side-by-side

Conglomerate of mystery.

It’s okay to not be the same,

Unity comes just after love.

Spam, you must learn to love yourself.

Sometimes it’s hard to feel at one

With the tin can filled to the brim,

Conglomerate of mystery.

The good, the bad, the beautiful,

Spam, you must learn to love yourself.

Conglomerate of mystery.

Hot Bod

My arms and my back are like jello
Cause I'm a fluffy and chubby lil fellow
So I went to the gym and broke every limb
And now I will head to my pillow

very few things rhyme with erika

There once was a girl named Erika,
She's fit to drive men hysterica,
With hair like a waterfall,
Dark eyes like emeralds,
The prettiest girl in all of America.

Young Johnny

Young Johnny came rolling from Krakin
A blade in his boot he was packin.
He squeezed out a deal when he cut Tony Friel
And cleaned up the mess with a napkin.

How do you do?

There was a rough rancher from Texas,
His herd was worth more than your Lexus
And he squeezed in his jeans till he busted the seams,
The old rough rancher from Texas.

nothing like poetry

softly spinning world,
loud and raucous media,
i live on the edge.

special thanks to Brooklyn and friends for joining our Sunday dinner and for the inspiration to use the word "raucous"

Nothing but Everything.

It's been far too long since this has been updated. A mountain of good intentions sucked into the sinkhole of day to day living. Alas, alas.

Ahem. a Haiku:

The snow falls gently
Encumbering everything.
Banana Pancake

The weather teased us with spring symptoms for a time before slapping us all in our big collective face with 2 days of snow. I remember last spring as the buds began to poke their green little heads out, the sky spat ice and white upon them. Tis a cruel world that does this.

Remember: we are nothing but everything.

Just Give Me a Scene Where the Music is Free

Last night we had another house show. Our Open Mic house shows have grown to bursting the doors and windows of our little green homestead. It all started two years ago back on 200 East at Dojos #2 and #9. For a couple of years we opened the doors of our little apartment and invited friends. We were ecstatic when 30 people came and went over the course of the night. Now, having moved to a more accommodating space, we are already heaving beyond our bounds with friends and friendly strangers. Last night at one point we had over 80 people jammed into our living room. 80. I couldn't be happier.

Back home in Southwest Missouri my music life consisted of sloppy punk rock or jug band shows in basements and living rooms with the occasional bar show thrown in from time to time. I always disliked the bar shows, perhaps because there was always a portion (either slight or significant) who had showed up for the purpose of drinking and looking at each other instead of an honest interest in the music that was being created before their eyes.

When I was 19, I played in a band called Las Cruces. Andy, Garrett, and I made our brand of noise in a rusty tobacco shed out in the Ozark hills. We didn't play a lot of shows but we did play the Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center once before I headed off on pilgrimage and Las Cruces became New Madrid. A whirlwind of changes followed that wonderful moment in time that was the night we played in St. Louis with Megafaun and two amazing noise groups.

"Small basements make for close friends." I believe in that. We have created something truly worthwhile here. Surely it is explained, at least in part, in this song. I warn you, there is one dirty little word.

P.S. Your Hair Has Never Looked Better

Carpe Diem!

Dang life city type o' blog posts comin from the avocottage today! I am in a diving class and love it! I did a one and a quarter gainer in class the other day. (back flop) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DdGcV_97X0&feature=related (start at 18 seconds.) It's not me here and it wasn't this bad but you get the idea. Its a great class. It sure stings! I'll tell ya that right now. Twice in my life I've slapped where I was wondering if I would be able to swim out. Of course thats an exaggeration but that's how it feels.
I guess you just have to smile when you just pan out and slap for everyone to get a good laugh out of it. You can find satisfaction in the fact that you went for it! Carpe Diem! How do you know you can do something unless you try? Even if you don't do it right the first time (cuz who does?) you just might do it a little better the second time (hopefully).
Too many times we let the fear of loss outweigh the desire for gain in our minds. The people that really pull ahead and succeed in life are those that are willing to take a chance when they don't know 100% what's gonna happen. We must step boldly in a direction we interpret to be right and learn as we go. I am not saying we need to make uneducated decisions based off of our ever changing moods. I am talking about stepping into the dark after all we can do. Nephi said it best. "We know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do."
Faith is a principle of action and power. I think it is very important not only that we believe in ourselves and have confidence but more importantly that we have faith in our Savior Jesus Christ who loves us. Knowing that he is pleased with us as we do our very best is one of the most satisfying experiences we can have; even when we mess up. Especially when we mess up because as we acknowledge His hand in our lives, in our humility, he is able to teach us and mold us into disciples. I am not really talking about diving. I'm talking about discipleship. I know that if we dedicate ourselves to the Lords work he will magnify our lives and give us joy in His service.
